People dancing to ethereal sounds, handmade natural fiber clothing, Mom’s and Pop’s cosmetics line. (All pictured below.)
Otherwise, loads and loads of jewelry. A couple of t-shirt makers.
I think this has a little more flair than Dance Africa but I can’t put my finger on why.

This party’s non-jeans wearing crowd brings the FiveSpot’s potential to life every 4th Saturday of the month. If you’re nostalgic of the days when people dressed up to go dancing in coordinated pairs, you’ll probably enjoy it. I attended the very first one two months ago. Resident DJ’s Mr Robinson and DJ Honky spin rare northern soul in between live performances by 60s singers. This Saturday Young Jessie from the Coasters is expected. Tickets are $7 on presale at myspace.com/digdeepernyc or $10 at the door.

Finally a really good pick for the Love category on this blog! Spotted at Maggie Brown (455 Myrtle) recently:

See their website.

If you want wi-fi and coffee but don’t feel like enduring a scene, one good retreat for you may be Bidonville at 47 Willoughby. Bidonville means shantytown in French and the cafe’s interior manages to take you there with charming minimalism. The place is owned by a lovely hubby and wife team. On my last visit I nearly fell asleep on the back couch.

Il Porto is the new restaurant at 37 Washington between Park and Flushing. See its menu.

Rushing to my day job. I’ll upload more pictures and add commentary later.

On June 14, our neighbor Max Power organized a Bloody Mary contest at Rope. Participating Myrtle Avenue establishments were: Maggie Brown, Chez Lola, Pillow Cafe and Luz.

I missed it and I’m sure many of you did. Apparently Maggie Brown’s Bloody Mary prevailed, beating the runner up by a few votes.

On September 13, Max Power strikes again with a Bloody Battle at Pillow, the cafe at 505 Myrtle. This time, Dekalb Avenue bloody maries come to Myrtle. Participating contestants include Rustik and the Alibi. A more complete list is a-coming. Save the date.

Since Afro-Punk’s Urban Arts Market is coming back to Myrtle and Ryerson this Sunday, I thought I’d share these previously unreleased shots of the Afro-Punk Block Party from a couple of weeks ago.

So it’s early august and Il Porto, the forthcoming restaurant at 37 Washington, hasn’t opened yet. I think the owners are now shooting for mid-august, between the 12th and the 15th. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. Opening a restaurant is no small feat and we want something good. For consolation, here’s a preview of the menu:
