Yes the miracle of my leaving Ft. Greene at random was made possible by the new bike. But my hopes of spending time with the Cosbys of Bed-Stuy  (i.e. the Porters, proud owners of the shop) are now dashed for at least another week. I should have known: they’re away for Memorial Day! Doh.

For every bad thing I’ve said about Rice’s dinner, I have ten good things to say about their brunch, the Rice Benedict especially. Ironically, there is no rice at all in this favorite of mine. But it’s different from the other Benedicts because arepas replace the expected english muffin. And guacamole with tomatoes and scallion complete the latin/Mexican palate. To max out on the feeling of decadence, you can order this as part of the bottomless mimosa brunch which adds a side, coffee, and unlimited mimosas.

The place reminds me of Union Market in Park Slope in terms of its provisions. But Spencer the store manager is waaaaaay nicer than just about any store manager anywhere and seems to know customers on a first name basis. A bit like Gnarly Vine’s owner.
Anyway, pictured here is the fish section in the back. But there’s also sushi, an impressive cheese counter, fresh fruits and vegetables, sandwiches and … a back yard!

Monday
That was the day I rediscovered SushiD after a hellish workday. I’d neglected it lately for Yamashiro on Myrtle. Their brown rice Dragon Roll was yummy.

During that meal, this tweet struck my attention:

The shade in front of Smooch is what summer afternoons in Ft. Greene is all about!

Three fellow FGCH twitterers (@illliterate @museumnerd and @andyjacob)  kept me abreast of the happenings at Habana Outpost last night without my even asking! Talk about organic neighborhood watching.

I am cut and pasting their updates:

I’ve been meaning to post Basquali’s priceless description of Smooch in the 2009 Spring and Summer edition of the BrooklynNow Guide. It goes like this:

The coffe’s bitter, the food’s bland, the wine’s sour, the beer’s flat, the service sucks, the staff couldn’t care less, and ambience doesn’t exist, but our customers are adorably cute and deliciously sexy, and that’s all that really matters. Open daily 8am-1am

Love it!

I did the former but Pillow did the latter. It’s hot.
