Bingo at Rope
I know this post is somewhat repetitive of last sunday’s. But the big difference is that I won nothing tonight.

Sunday night is bingo night at Rope. I have played about a half a dozen times and no matter how many cards I’ve purchased, I’ve never won. Until last night. I had a choice between a free drink, some (ahem) porn and a surprise gift. I chose the surprise gift which turned out to be a Tommy Lee Jones film. Many in the crowd thought I made the wrong choice and were quite vocal about it.
I then competed for the Grand Prize (two tickets for a movie at BAM) along with the evening’s other winners but this time my luck fell short.

Myrtle avenue bar crawlers often find ourselves tired of Kum Kau or Sapolo (both Chinese greasy forks), when we get hungry past 11pm. Looks like we can now look forward to one more choice: Vesper. I have it on good authority that the bar is considering resuming its recent makeover by adding a kitchen. Yay.
To be fair, the Five Spot has been providing decent bar appetizers (chicken fingers, chicken wings, fried catfish and shrimp etc.) until 2 am on certain nights and I found out the other day that Sputnik on Taaffe and Dekalb offers its delicious burgers, parmesan fries and *salads* until 2 am as well. But Sputnik is a bit of a walk from the Rope-FiveSpot-Vesper bar axis on Myrtle and one isn’t always in the mood for the high bar and narrow layout at the 5Spot. Let’s see what Vesper brings to the selection. Since there is already tons of grease to go around past 11pm, it would be nice if they provided some salads or other lighter snacks. I’m crossing my fingers but not holding my breath.
Did it rain that hard today or is something wrong with the drainage? Most importantly, how do I cross the street to Rope?

A friend of mine who used to waiter at Il Torchio calls my practice of hopping from spot to spot when I come back from a long day’s work in Manhattan “the Myrtle Shuffle”. A beer here, a burger there but lots of love everywhere. I’ve lived in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill for 11 years, 4 of which have been on Myrtle. At first there wasn’t much to do and I hung out mostly in the city (first 3 years) and then on Dekalb when all the restaurants came. Then last summer (07), a critical mass of restaurants and businesses piled onto Myrtle. Now my friends have a hard time peeling me off of what was once “Murder Avenue”, especially in the winter. I have been a blogger for a while now and I thought I’d start sharing my Myrtle adventures. The wider playground is of course Fort Greene/Clinton Hill i.e. Dekalb, Lafayette and often Fulton so expect some of that laced in too.
Oh and the header picture was taken in the bathroom at what has now become a favorite, Rope.
